Skills I've Picked Up and Improved Just From Developing My Own Creative Personal Projects
Looking back, I’ve realized that working on my personal projects has brought me the greatest growth in my creative journey. The choice to pursue different personal projects has pushed me out of my comfort zone, taught me new skills, and positioned me to lead my own design studio. At the same time, personal projects have helped me become a better designer and excel in my role as a logo designer, allowing me to incorporate new perspectives gained from various design fields.
I’ve acquired numerous new skills along the way, skills that have led me here today and opened doors to new projects and creative areas. Some of these I will outline in the following list.
Type Design
One of the skills that I’m happy to have learned is type design. I’m a big fan of fonts and typefaces, and learning to create them has been very rewarding.
Mockup Design
After taking a course in 2015, I became a fan of mockups. So in 2016 I started taking pictures and turning them into mockups for design presentations.
Web Design
Working on my own website projects has helped me learn more about web design, which led me to offer web design services to clients.
Creative Direction
Taking the opportunity to open my own design studio – Brand Creators – has helped me learn the art of creative direction and project management.
Email Marketing
Thanks to launching personal project websites like Design a Lot, I’ve learned email marketing and gained over 25000 subscribers since 2016.
Copywriting
Creating personal products and websites meant I also had to write the text for them. So along the way I’ve developed fair copywriting skills.
Digital Marketing
By opening my own design studio, I have had to learn digital marketing and how to manage paid ad campaigns on platforms like Google Ads & Meta Ads.
Other Skills
Creating personal projects has taught me many other skills that have been useful in my creative journey so far. And I’m always looking to learn more.
